Energy independence doesn't mean leaving the grid

"Energy independence" is one phrase covering three unrelated purchases. Naming which one you want turns an emotional decision into a budget.

There's a phrase that shows up in almost every pitch, on almost every brochure, and in almost every conversation people have with themselves at 11pm after the third quote lands: energy independence.

It sounds like one thing. It's three.

Sorting out which one you actually want is the highest-leverage twenty minutes in this entire process, because the three cost wildly different amounts and one of them is almost never worth buying.

The three things people mean

Independence from outages. You want the freezer running and the sump pump working when a November wind event takes the street down. This is a resilience purchase. It's about hours and loads.

Independence from bill volatility. You're tired of opening the January bill and doing math you didn't consent to. This is a hedging purchase. It's about locking in a cost you currently don't control.

Independence from the utility company. You want out. No relationship, no account number. This is a disconnection purchase, and in Western New York it is almost always the wrong one.

Most people arrive wanting the first two. A lot of them get quoted the third, or something priced like the third, because the phrase covers all of it and nobody stops to ask which one is on the table.

Myth

Solar makes you independent from the grid.

Reality

Grid-tied solar makes you a customer who generates. You stay connected, you stay billed, and without a battery you go dark exactly when your neighbors do.

What a grid connection actually costs you

Here's the number that reframes the whole conversation.

National Grid's residential basic service charge in upstate New York is $19.00 per month. That's the line that covers metering, billing, and the equipment between you and the pole. You pay it if you use 2,000 kWh. You pay it if you use zero. You pay it if your array had a spectacular July and you exported more than you consumed.

That's about $228 a year to remain connected, before a single kilowatt-hour changes hands.

Now — is $19 a month a scandal? No. It's the price of a permanent, maintained, on-demand backup source that shows up the instant your production doesn't cover your load, which in WNY is most of December. Framed that way, it's one of the cheaper insurance products you own.

But it does mean something specific: as long as you're connected, you have not eliminated a bill. You've reduced a variable one and kept a fixed one. Any pitch that implies otherwise is selling the third kind of independence at the price of the second.

The part that surprises people

If you install solar with no battery and the grid goes down, your system goes down too.

Not because it's broken. Because it's required to. A grid-tied inverter is designed to stop exporting the moment it loses the grid signal, so that a line worker restoring your street isn't touching a wire your roof is quietly energizing. It's called anti-islanding and it is not negotiable.

So on the day you most want your solar panels — bright, cold, clear, everything else on the block dark — a standard grid-tied array does nothing for you.

This catches people badly, and it's the single most common gap between what someone thought they bought and what they own. The point here is narrower: outage independence is a battery-or-generator purchase, not a solar purchase. They are frequently sold in the same meeting by the same person, which is exactly why the distinction blurs.

Why nobody here actually goes off-grid

True disconnection is a real engineering problem, and WNY makes it a hard one.

Off-grid sizing isn't driven by your annual average. It's driven by your worst stretch — the run of short, overcast, snow-covered days when your array underperforms and your house needs the most energy it will need all year. In Buffalo that's a January week where the panels are under an inch of lake-effect and the sun sets before dinner.

To carry that week without a grid, you don't buy a slightly bigger system. You buy a dramatically bigger one, plus enough storage to ride out multiple bad days in a row, plus a generator anyway for the stretch when even that isn't enough. You've now bought all three kinds of independence, at the cost of the most expensive one, to solve a problem the $19 connection was already solving.

There are people for whom this makes sense — a property where running a line is genuinely prohibitive, mostly. If that's you, you already know it. For everyone else, the honest version is: you don't want off-grid. You want your house to keep working, and you want the bill to stop surprising you. Those are cheaper problems.

    Write one sentence: 'I want ___ so that ___.' If the sentence is about outages, you're shopping backup. If it's about bills, you're shopping generation and rate exposure. If it's about the utility itself, ask yourself what specifically the utility did.

    Price the fixed part honestly.

    $19 a month stays on the bill. Build it into whatever payback math you're being shown. If a proposal's savings figure only works when that line disappears, the figure is wrong.

    Separate the two purchases in the meeting.

    Ask for the solar economics and the backup economics as two numbers, not one blended monthly payment. They answer different questions and they should survive being looked at alone.

    Start backup from the loads, not the equipment.

    What has to stay on, and for how long? That answer sizes the system. Working the other direction — picking a battery and hoping — is how people end up with expensive partial coverage.

Electrician note

If a proposal promises independence and includes no battery, it is promising bill independence, not outage independence. Both are legitimate products. Only one of them keeps your sump pump running, and the word 'independence' does not tell you which one you're holding.

The reframe worth keeping

Independence isn't a product. It's a set of specific things going wrong that you've decided in advance you can handle.

That's a much less romantic sentence than the brochure version, and it's also the one that saves money — because once you've named the failure you're buying against, most of the upsells stop making sense on their own terms. You're no longer buying freedom. You're buying eighteen hours of sump pump, freezer, furnace, and two outlets, and you can price that.

The homeowners who end up happiest here are rarely the ones who bought the most equipment. They're the ones who could tell you, before they signed, exactly which bad day they were buying against.
