Summer bills in WNY spike for two different reasons — more kWh used and sometimes a higher effective rate — and they need different responses.

- Separate kWh from dollars first. A higher bill can be more usage, a higher rate, or both.
- Window AC units use 500–1,500 W when running. If one runs 8 hours a day for 30 days, that's 120–360 kWh extra per unit.
- National Grid's supply rate changes monthly. Check your bill's supply charge line against March or April to see if the rate moved.
- A mini-split or central AC running during a heat wave can easily add $50–$100 to a single month's bill.

- Many WNY homes run electric baseboard heat all winter, which can actually mask how large an AC load is by comparison — the summer swing feels bigger than it is when your reference point is a mild spring bill.
Why summer feels so much worse than the bill suggests it should
Most WNY homeowners experience winter as the big electricity season — baseboard heat, shorter days, space heaters filling in gaps. Then June arrives, the AC goes on, and the bill jumps in a way that feels disproportionate to what changed.
Two things happen at once in summer:
- Cooling load adds real kWh that weren't there in spring.
- The supply rate per kWh is often at or near its seasonal peak.
Both hit the same bill. That's why a summer spike can feel larger than the behavior change that caused it.
Step one: separate price from usage
Pull your last three bills and write down two numbers for each:
- kWh used (on every National Grid bill, usually in a bar chart on the back)
- Total amount due
Divide total by kWh to get an all-in effective rate. If that rate is materially higher than your spring bills at the same usage level, part of your spike is on the supply and delivery side, not just you running the AC more.
If kWh jumped significantly, the load is the story.
How much does AC actually add in WNY?
WNY summers are mild by national standards — most years, true heat waves (90°F+) last only a few days to a couple weeks. But humid 80°F days push AC runtime harder than people expect, because the cooling system is fighting humidity as much as temperature.
Rough load estimates:
- Window unit, 8,000 BTU: 700–900 W, draws about 0.8 kWh/hour running
- Window unit, 12,000 BTU: 1,000–1,200 W, draws about 1.1 kWh/hour running
- Central AC, 2-ton: 2,000–2,400 W, draws about 2.2 kWh/hour running
- Central AC, 3-ton: 3,000–3,600 W, draws about 3.3 kWh/hour running
An 8-hour average runtime for a 2-ton central system through June and July adds roughly 400–530 kWh over a month. At a WNY all-in effective rate of $0.18–$0.22/kWh, that's $72–$117 before you factor in any supply rate movement.
Three window units running simultaneously can add a similar amount.
What to check on your National Grid bill
Supply charge line: Look for the rate in $/kWh on your current bill. Compare it to your March or April bill. If it moved up even $0.01–$0.02/kWh, that multiplies across every kWh you used — including the baseline load that was there all along.
ESCO or alternative supplier line: If you signed up with an alternative supplier (ESCO), check whether their rate is still competitive with National Grid's posted default. ESCOs frequently lock in promotional rates that expire in winter or spring, then roll to higher rates just as summer usage climbs.
Delivery charge components: Delivery charges include fixed items (customer charge, distribution) that don't scale with usage, plus variable items that do. In summer, some rate components apply that don't show up in March.
If you have solar: why summer production doesn't always cancel the AC load
Solar advocates often pitch summer as "free cooling season" — your panels peak in June and July, so the AC runs off sunshine. In WNY, that's partially true, but there are important limits:
- Net metering gives you credit for export, not free runtime. If your AC runs at night, it draws from the grid regardless of daytime production.
- A cloudy week in July can cut production 60–70%. Buffalo's cloud cover is real even in summer.
- AC load can exceed panel output on hot days. A 3-ton central system running hard uses more power than most residential arrays generate at peak.

What actually helps before next summer
Short term (right now):

- If window units are your primary cooling, consider whether a mini-split is worth evaluating — they're dramatically more efficient per BTU.
