The arbitrage arithmetic, done properly
Spread is the difference between on-peak and off-peak. Take the mid-spread, multiply by the usable kWh of the battery, then by realistic cycles a year — 250 to 300, not 365. That is the gross annual arbitrage value. Compare it against the marginal cost of the battery over its warranty term before you let a salesperson call storage an investment.
On this rate the mid-spread is roughly $0.26 per kWh. On a 13.5 kWh battery at 275 cycles a year that is about $965 a year, gross, before round-trip losses and before you account for the fact that you cannot arbitrage a battery you are also holding in reserve for outages.

- Winter on-peak pricing is much lower than summer. Annualize before you get excited.
- You still cannot escape the basic service charge.
- Export restrictions in network areas apply regardless of which rate you pick.
Interconnection
Getting connected on Con Edison
- Secondary network distribution — common in Manhattan and dense parts of Brooklyn and Queens — is designed to push power one direction only. Exporting solar onto a network can require a network protector study, an export-limiting device, or in some cases is simply not permitted.
- Radial-fed areas, which covers most of Staten Island, the Bronx, outer Queens, and Westchester, behave much more like the rest of the state.
- Con Edison's review is the slowest in New York. Six months from application to Permission to Operate is not unusual.
- NYC also layers its own DOB filing and FDNY rooftop-access requirements on top of the utility process. Setback rules eat usable roof area.
